News: Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 Receives Non-FTA Export Authorization

30/05/2025

Houston, Texas (Press Release) -- In a significant development for the energy sector, Sempra Infrastructure has announced that the Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project has received non-Free Trade Agreement (non-FTA) export authorization from the U.S. Department of Energy. This important milestone enables the project to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to countries that do not have a trade agreement with the United States.

This development is significant because the authorization marks a critical step in expanding U.S. LNG export capabilities, positioning Sempra to play a vital role in meeting global energy demands. The project is expected to attract significant investment and create thousands of jobs, contributing to economic growth in the region and beyond. The initiative also aligns with broader climate goals by promoting cleaner energy sources, supporting a transition towards more sustainable energy globally.

In 2023, we reported on Sempra's divestment in its non-controlling stake of Port Arthur Phase 1 to KKR. Nonetheless, according to a recent report by Reuters, the demand for LNG is increasing, particularly in Asia and Europe, where countries are seeking energy security and a reduction in carbon emissions. Sempra’s expansion efforts reflect the growing need for reliable and responsible energy solutions for G7 government energy departments, amidst a rapidly changing energy landscape.
